In this tutorial you will learn how do apply different lighting effects to your photograph using the Photoshop's lighting effect tool.

Step 1: Open a quality photograph in Photoshop.

Open your picture and let's get started.

Step 2: First we will make a duplicate copy of this image so that if something goes undesired then we have a photograph to start our work again.

 Make a duplicate layer.

Background copy

Step 3: Select the Lighting effect Menu from the Render submenu in the Filter Menu as it may be seen below.

Filter, Render, Lighting Effects.

There are a lot of ways in which you can apply lighting effect to your photograph but since i want you to experiment most of them, so i have shown 2 methods.

In the Lighting effect Dialog Box that opens set the Light type to Spotlight and Style to Soft spotlight, you can change the color of the light by double clicking on the color box as shown below. You can change how your light falls on the Photograph by moving the eclipse over the photo preview or even elongating it to get a more realistic effect.

Step 4: As i have already told you that you can experiment with the different light type, styles and properties, the values that I chose are shown below.

Choose your style.

Step 5: Here is my final Image, note the style of lighting can be changed to suit your own requirement as show in the next steps.

Final image, but wait there are many more options.

Step 6: Now I have changed the Style to Flood light and the changed the color while keeping all the other values as default as shown below to get the effect i got below.

Alternative styles.

Step 7: Here is my Final Image with another light type.

Another example completed using a different style.

And that is it for this tutorial on basic lighting effects with Photoshop, remember to experiment with various styles and angles to enhance the look.
